Jan van Eyck

born: Maaseik, Bishopric of Liège, Holy Roman Empire [now Belgium]; 1390
died: Bruges, Bishopric of Liège, Holy Roman Empire [now Belgium]; 9 July 1441

Jan had a brother Herbert and with some of the earlier work it is not clear who painted them. The Ghent altarpiece was started by Herbert and finished after Herbert's death by Jan.
