In the period from 1915 to 1919, the period just before and during the Great War (the war to end all wars), Picasso meets Diaghilev and he became acquainted with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, Diaghilev's ballet troupe of Russian expatriates. Diaghilev representes the leading edge of artistic thought in the pre-war period. As impresario he finances and organizes changes in ballet, music, and art that change the nature of the ballet permanently. He consistently goes broke and stiffs his creditors, but his artistic judgments are often right and he enlivenes the first part of the twentieth century with preessent performance art and great new music. Diaghilev convinces Picasso to design sets for several ballets. Picasso meets ballerina Olga Khokhlova. They marry 12 July 1918. In 1919 Picasso goes to London with the Diaghilev company and designs the sets for The Three-cornered Hat, with music by Manuel de Falla. In 1920, Picasso continues to work with Diaghilev, and designs sets for Pulcinella, with music by Igor Stravinsky. |
